Description
A male pileated woodpecker returns to the nest to feed its eager young. The babies heard the adult arriving and came to the mouth of their hole to wait, each one hoping for the first bite. This bird (Dryocopus pileatus) may be the largest North American woodpecker; the ivory-billed woodpecker is larger but may be extinct. I photographed this nest at Fontenelle Forest Nature Preserve in eastern Nebraska. They are more common in the eastern United States and on the Pacific coast, and it is unusual to see one of these birds here.

Homey and a nod to the dads of the bird world. I have woodpeckers in the urban forest where I hike, and I love seeing them, sometimes following their insect hunting to know where they are, Nikolyn. I love your name.

What a cool capture!

It was a thrill to get to see this. I watched for about two hours, just in order to get to see an adult feed the babies three times. In between those times, one adult and the chicks were deep in the hole while the other adult was out foraging. The waits seemed endless LOL Thanks for the comment, Sarah.
