The courthouse site was part of a 21 acre tract of land deeded to the county by George Lee and his wife for the development of a county seat. The site was designated as a public square In this original deed, and a wooden courthouse was authorized for construction. The present building was completed in May, 1899, at a cost of $19,505. William F Schrage was architect.
