A Russian friend told me how when she was a little girl, they would boil the skin on a red onion to create a dye to decorate eggs. I employed the same idea to dye a piece of crumpled paper to use as a model for this drawing. The continuous surface of the egg imparts its influence on the drawing; compressing and expanding the imagery as it evolves around the form.
To work is to enter into the stream of the pulse of creation. The act of drawing and painting awakens my purpose, renders me present, and stirs me alive. It is my gift, my humility, my bliss, and the means by which I'm best able to span the distance, and enter into the rhythms pulsing through the ever swirling tumult of existence. The VSP series (very small paintings), came about as an interlude, a kind of reprieve from a very time intensive series of drawings & paintings on eggs - elliptical spheres. They continue in the same spirit as the more ambitious spheres, but are rendered as small independent vignettes - thin slices of observation and improvisation. The Crescent Moon series, so named for the crescent and half moon...
