Description
The most beautiful time of the year has finally began to arrive on the ten thousand acre wildlife refuge of St. Marks island. It's Spring time as is evident by the slowly over taking green showing up in trees and brush alike, the birds are ever more lively , the skies even appear to celebrate Springs arrival by putting on the greatest shows on earth during sunrise/sundown with the purest yellows, oranges, and blues seen the year through. During the winter months, the island serves as wintering grounds for thousands of waterfowl species, as well as migrating hawks in the hundreds. Now it's Springs turn , the animals are starting new lives, pairing up and preparing for more mouths to feed, just the sheer numbers of wildlife seen on the island is so beautifully incredible to the eyes and ears alike that it'll take several years visiting the area to fully enjoy it's significance ! As I begin to develop this painting, the vastness of the marshes was one of the first things I wanted the viewer to feel, the distance one can see across them is amazing !. My next problem was, what to place in the painting that would best represent the area without overcrowding it and making appear as an illustration instead of a natural scene. The Great white egret was the perfect bird to place just right for effect, the feeling of movement, I also slowly infused the normally reddish brown grasses in the marsh with bits of Spring green. This is a place I will definitely be doing more art from...maybe some alligators next?
