A beautiful Jacobite rose, (x alba Alba Maxima), displays its beauty in the fullness of the summer sun.
The Jacobite rose is the double version of the White Rose of York and dates to the 16th century. This is the white rose worn as a symbol of support for The Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie, whose attempt to reclaim the British throne in 1745 ("The Rising") ended in failure and death for many of the rebels.
Descended from the European wild dog rose, R. canina, this rose is hardy and easy to cultivate but has a more refined appearance than wild roses.
