Love it.
The moth for this caterpillar is colored in shades of brown with the upper wings nicely patterned for camouflage. Moths live for approximately 17 days, and there are 3 to 4 hatches each year. Although they range throughout the eastern half of America and into the southern part of Canada, they cannot survive severe cold. Each year they migrate from the southern climes northward.
The caterpillars eat almost anything - this one was on our tomato plants. Their importance as pests is small, and they are victims of predatory wasps and bugs.
I was captivated by the bright colors, so I placed it on white paper to photograph it before putting it back outside (in the woods, not on the tomatoes).
This picture was taken July 20, 2011, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania.

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

Very striking! Great capture!
Carol Senske replied:
I always love your visits, Doris:>). Thank you for the wonderful comment! I'm trying to get ready to go on a 10 day drive-about with my sister; two gray-haired old ladies having an adventure and stopping to see friends and family along the route. Hoping for some photo ops, especially on "The Cape". My sister wants to go on a seal watching cruise out of Chatham so we'll do that. The Woods Hole contingent of our family says they'd rather sit it out; these locals just don't know how to have fun:>)

Very unique presentation, Carol! I love that the "pillar" is the center of attention, and your background accentuates this creature!
Carol Senske replied:
I couldn't figure out how to photograph it so it showed up, so I brought it in the house and put it on a piece of white paper - voila:>) It is a colorful critter!
