Diffusion of potassium permanganate, image 1 of 4. The clock shows that the experiment has started at 12 o'clock. The piece of potassium manganate can be seen at the bottom of the beaker. A wisp of purple can be seen, indicating that diffusion has started. Diffusion is the random movement of molcules in solution eventually leading to a uniform concentration of the molecules throughout the solution. Diffusion always occurs from a region of high concentration to a region of low. For a sequence showing the diffusion, see A350/132, A350/133 and A350/134.
