Description
Mount Palomar Observatory. This dome, completed in 1948, houses the Hale Telescope named after the astronomer George Ellery Hale. This mirror telescope (5 metres, 200 inches) was the world's largest until 1976. Many important advances in astronomy took place here, such as the first observation of a brown dwarf star and the first optical spectrum obtained from a quasar. The dome is located at an elevation of 1867 metres in the Palomar mountains, California, USA. The building has a height of 41 metres and a diameter of 42 metres. It consists of a moveable aluminium and steel dome mounted on concrete walls.
