Description
Breathing. Coloured X-ray showing exhalation. The horizontal bands are the ribs, enclosing the lungs (light blue). The heart is the orange mass at centre, while the diaphragm divides the ribs and the abdominal cavity (dark blue, lower centre). During exhalation the ribs move down and inwards, and the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards. This forces air out of the lungs, and also pushes the heart upwards. For an image showing inhalation see P590/237.
