Description
2011 tsunami travel times. Computer model of tsunami travel times in the Pacific Ocean, contoured and colour-coded from short (red) through medium (yellow) to long (blue). This tsunami was produced by the large offshore earthquake of 11 March 2011 (epicentre marked by red star). The tsunami spread through the entire Pacific in around 20 hours. Most areas around the Pacific saw only moderate waves, but the worst-hit areas in Japan were inundated with surges 3 to 7 metres high, destroying coastal cities and killing many thousands. This model was produced using data gathered by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center.
