Description
Radiosonde launch. Radiosondes are units designed to measure and transmit meteorological data when deployed on a weather balloon. The weather balloon (upper centre) is typically filled with hydrogen and released with the radiosonde (centre left) attached. This is the Met Office's Mark III model, first used in the late 1970s. Designed to gather and transmit data on pressure, humidity and temperature, it was the first fully automatic upper atmosphere measurement system used on a routine operational basis. The Met Office is the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in October 1985.
