Earthworm. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the body of a round segmented earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris), showing the first 14 anterior segments. From right: the mouth (1-2), buccal cavity (3-4), thick pharynx (5-7), oesophagus (pink rings, 8-14). Segments 8-14 show the pseudohearts (dorsal pink rings). Segments 10-14 show the seminal vesicles producing sperm (solid purple circular areas). Segments 12 and 14 show the anterior and posterior seminal funnels (deep purple tubes), and the spermatheca (solid dark purple circle). Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
