Description
Muscle physiology research. Researcher handling a sample vial and pipette. The work involves extracting proteins from muscle cells using antibodies. The ice in the background is used to slow chemical processes while the samples are manipulated. This work is being carried out at Dundee University, Scotland, as part of research into the physiology, genetics and biochemistry of mammalian muscles. The aim is to study the genetic control of proteins involved in biochemical reactions that increase muscle mass following resistance exercise. This could lead to genetic or pharmacological methods for increasing muscle mass. This research, ongoing as of 2006, is being carried out by Dr Keith Barr and colleagues in the functional molecular biology laboratory.
