Description
This tiger snarling at a snake is one of the many bizarre and extraordinary sculpted creatures that inhabit the Tiger Balm Garden in Singapore, a popular tourist attraction that I visited while on R&R during my tour of duty with the U.S. Army in DaNang, South Vietnam, 1968-69.
The theme park, which opened in 1937, contains over 1,000 statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, folklore, legends, history, and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism.
The photograph is available here as a museum-quality archival print on canvas or acid-free paper, framed or unframed.
The public garden is one of three Tiger Balm Gardens built by Burmese-Chinese brothers Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, developers of the Tiger Balm pain-killing ointment and other products. The Gardens are sometimes known as the Haw Par Villa Gardens. The first garden, built in 1935 in Hong Kong, is now closed. The third garden, in the Fujian Province of Mainland China, remains open as a museum.
