I love to walk along the river near my log cabin home in Wyoming, where the history and the beauty of animals, birds and landscape keep me enthralled. So, while working as Artist in Residence at St. Joseph's Indian School in South Dakota, I took a walk along the Missouri River. My impressions of the various colors of the icy river, the reeds, birds, fox and raccoon tracks in the mud of the riverbank, the glimpse of a fox, and the stories my Lakota students told me, all came together in this design, drawn first in my journal and then developed into this oil painting. It forms a set with "February Dreams."

I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...
