I was born in New York in 1956, 330 years after my Dutch ancestors first arrived at the same location. My earliest art memories are of finger painting and puppets, both of which became important later on as well. When I was 8 years old I still couldn't read. Fortunately for me my mother found a school where they decided I was perfectly intelligent, I simply needed art immersion and an undistracted reading group. The art teacher, Ms. Glass, of Beauvoir School in Washington DC was a special influence. I still have the framed still life I did that hung in the school dining hall for two decades.
