Description
Antarctic springtail (Cryptopygus antarcticus), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Its head is at left. This insect is well adapted to life in the Antarctic. Its blood contains an antifreeze, and it can survive temperatures as low as -28 degrees Celsius. In extreme conditions, the springtail can become dormant for a period of time. It inhabits the region just below the surface of the ice and above the permafrost layer, feeding on tiny plants and animals. Magnification unknown.
