Description
Charming, typically decorative scene by self-taught Swiss artist Johannes Zulle (1841-1938) painted in 1894 in watercolour and gold paint showing peasants from the Appenzeller region of north east Switzerland herding cows and goats. The area is famous for its cow's milk cheese, a hard cheese variety made using a herbal brine that sometimes incorporates wine or cider. Zulle trained as a weaver, his main source of income until his sideline as a painter - influenced by fellow peasant artist Johannes Muller - evolved into a full-time career as an artist and creator of decorative patterns. The latter remain influential and are still used by Swiss 'souvenir painters' today.
