Description
This original, beautiful, dynamic Digital Artwork by artist Richard Claraval is the end product of numerous processes. These produce exciting and dynamic results though they start with photos of the real world.
Tracing the evolution of any of these pieces would be virtually impossible. Each is the end product of numerous steps in a variety of processes. Some that I use frequently are cutting “holes” through one image and then pasting it on top of another; extremely contrasting a layer; altering the one or more colors through adjusting its hue and saturation, darkening and lightening, dodging and burning. I have some amazingly prosaic photos as the basic grist for these pieces such as the rough concrete floor of my apartment, the pebbled sidewalk outside of the building I live in, photos of interesting movie images shot right off the TV and patterns of light through a cut glass door on a dark wall. I will almost always “invert” the color of an image just to see what I get, and this frequently produces very interesting results. This and other of the processes I use produce results that I could never have imagined beforehand, and is one of the most exciting and unusual aspects of this body of work. In this work I am following Isamu Noguchi’s notion that serendipity is the most powerful force in art.
I’ve never been hung up about materials, but have always been more concerned with the results rather than the process of getting there. Therefore while these pieces are in the beginning derived from phots of the real world, any “unnaturalness” they may have does not bother me, and in fact, I rather enjoy it. I like strangeness added to beauty. People who like photos where objects have smooth boundaries, for example, may not like the jagged lines between shapes of these pieces, but I do. And I also like the pixilation of images I get when I blow them up to very large size. And this actually seems to me to be being true to the real material of these pieces.
A breakthrough came when I “drew” over a complex image with a solid color, cut out that part, and that pasted the remaining layer over another complex image.
I always liked the detail images of my drawings, and with this medium I can “zoom in”, cut out and create new pieces from larger ones. I don’t simply use these details as is but alter them to make the compositions integrate and balance.
