Description
Ask someone, anyone, what is the first thing that springs to mind when you hear the name Calcutta or Kolkata. Of the ones that recognize the name immediately, the common associations are Mother Teresa, politics, poverty, culture, passion. While all this is true, few think about the bountiful natural resources that are there all around. For example, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Gardens in Shibpur.
The gardens were founded in 1787 by Colonel Robert Kyd, an army officer of the British East India Company, primarily for the purpose of identifying new plants of commercial value, such as teak, and growing spices for trade. The gardens now exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares. To call it massive would be an under statement. It is very beautiful and an area of peace and tranquility.
