Description
General Philip Sheridan was a Union general in the Civil War, and was immortalized on horseback by renowned American sculptor Gutzon Borglum, whose most famous work is Mount Rushmore. In 1908, before he was established as a 'first rate" sculptor, Borglum won a competition to create a statue of Sheridan in Washington, D.C. President Theodore Roosevelt was present at the unveiling of the statue, and publicly declared that it was "first rate", an accolade that helped boost Borglum's career, which culminated with his masterpiece on Mount Rushmore (interestingly, Theodore Roosevelt is one of the four Presidents on the South Dakota mountainside). The famous statue of General Sheridan, with hat in hand, is at Sheridan Circle in Washington, D.C.
The full statue of General Sheridan has him riding a horse, but this photograph is a partial view of the statue and focuses on the man's upper body and his dramatically outstretched arm, with hat in hand.
