Description
Bracken rhizome. Light micrograph of part of a cross-section through a rhizome from the bracken Pteridium aquilinum. The centre of the rhizome is off top, while the outer surface is off bottom. Two small vascular strands (meristeles, round) are at lower right and lower left, with a larger one half-seen across top. A band of supporting fibres (red) is also seen. Each meristele consists of central xylem vessels (large, white), surrounded by successive areas of phloem, pericycle and endodermis.
