Description
By the Waterworks – The multi-columned structure in the foreground of this mixed-media view houses apumping facility on the banks of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. It was built in 1812, the first such plant in a large American city. After learning of its success, other municipalities also began to regard thesafe delivery of water as a public responsibility. Behind the pumping station we see a hillside partially obscuring the north entrance to the Philadelphia Museum of Art—one of the nation’s largest—with over a quarter of a million objects in its collection.
