Description
Calcite Quarry, Michigan, USA, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). This large quarry is mined for carbonate rocks such as limestone and dolomite. Calcite (calcium carbonate) is the main mineral found in limestone. Calcite Quarry is the largest carbonate mine in the world, and lies on the shores of Lake Huron (top). The quarry itself (the grey/white area at centre) is about 7 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide. It has been mined since the 1920s. The town at left is Rogers City. Photographed by a member of the ISS's Expedition 13 crew on 6 May 2006.
