Description
Culross is an unspoilt 16th century village, formerly a Royal Burgh, in the south coast of Fife. The houses mostly have red pantiled roofs brought by collier merchant ships returning from Holland with the tiles as ballast. Some of my ancestors lived in Culross in the 18th century and worked as salters in the salt pans at the edge of the River Forth, making salt from the evaporation of sea water.
The Cantle o' the Causey (or Crown of the Causey or causeway) was a series of large flat stones set in the raised centre of the street which canted the rainwater into the gutters. It also allowed the gentry and ladies to walk comfortably away from these open drains and the rougher cobblestones on either side.
