Description
CERN construction, 1978. Pyramid-shaped earthworks designed to prevent rockfalls during construction work on buildings at CERN. CERN is the European particle physics laboratory on the Swiss-French border near Geneva. This construction work is for experimental halls in the North Area of the SPS accelerator. Here, particle beams from the SPS (the Super Proton Synchrotron) are collided with targets or other beams. The collisions form new particles that are studied by physicists to reveal the fundamental structure of matter. The SPS is an underground ring with a 7-kilometre circumference. The building of the main ring was completed by 1976. CERN was founded in 1954.
