Description
Cloud height balloon launch. Meteorologist releasing a cloud height balloon (also called a ceiling balloon) that is designed to allow calculation of the height of the clouds above the release point. The balloon is bright red and inflated to a standard size so that its rate of ascent is known. The time taken for it to be lost from sight in the clouds is timed, and the cloud height calculated from this data. This observation is being carried out for the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Photographed in January 1968, at the Met Office weather station at Glasgow Airport, Abbotsinch, Paisley, Scotland.
