Description
This wide field image of Constellation Lyra was captured on November 1, 2021 at Badlands Observatory in Quinn, South Dakota. Annotations are by Pixinsight.
In Greek mythology, the lyre in Lyra was the first ever made and was owned by Orpheus. He used it to drown out the Sirens' calls which allowed the passage of Jason and the Argonauts.
The brightest star in Lyra is Vega, which is the 5th brightest star in the sky. Lyra also contains the Ring Nebula and the famous double double star Epsilon Lyrae. In 1976 starlight that started it's journey from Epsilon Lyrae in 1776 was relayed from Hawaii to Boston to light the two lamps used in the bicentennial celebration of the United States and the commemoration of the ride of Paul Revere.
