Death of Sappho c1896 by French Painter Charles Amable Lenoir (1860 - 1926); an Academic painter who was mentored by William-Adolphe Bouguereau and specialized in painting realistic portraits as well as mythological and religious artwork. He was awarded the Prixde Rome twice and also the Légion d'honneur.
This portrait version of the Archaic Greek Poet Sappho (620 - 570 BCE) has her under water among the sea plants as she slowly drowns, with a Lyre (ancestor to or relative of the harp), with broken strings floating by her left hand.
