Canyon deChelly is unique among National Park service. It is entirely Navajo Tribal Trust Land owned by the Navajo Nation and is home to the canyon community, while park matters are administered by the National Park Service. Access to the canyon floor is restricted, and visitors are allowed to travel in the canyons only when accompanied by a park ranger or an authorized Navajo guide. The only exception to this rule is the White House Ruin Trail.
......
Canyon de Chelly National Monument has lush vegitation in a Canyon considered to be in the middle of the desert. The river was been dammed outside the reservation, in spite of protests by those living in the Canyon and on the Reservation for miles below the canyon. Little or no water flows on the surface through the canyon, but some water comes over the walls from streams in rainy weather. So the water table stays high enough for the trees and other vegetation to survive. But there is no longer enough water for them to raise cattle and horses as they did for centuries.
. . . . .
None of the land is federally owned. The name chelly (or Chelley) is a Spanish borrowing of the Navajo word Tsyiʼ, which means "canyon" (literally "inside the rock"). The Spanish pronunciation of de Chelly was adapted into English, apparently through modelling after a French-like spelling pronunciation, and now English pronunciation.
It is composed much of what is called redstone or red limestone. Is one of the areas of Arizona which is considered excellent for eco-tourism as the Navajos protect the earth, forests, and rivers or streams.

This is a ridiculously good-looking black and white print Bob and Nadine. I was thinking "gee, even in the shadows, it looks like the Ansel Adams water bath technique". Then I read the bit about you being a student of Ansel's and I'm like "Duh!" I used to run several professional E6 film processing operations back up till the early 90's and I actually used Ansel's water bath technique with E6 slide film. It definitely works but we did encounter some reciprocity issues which had to be overcome with more testing.

John, You should have seen me with my walker, climbing the Hill, to get to this viewpoint, without any trails. Lifting it over rocks, etc, to get to the place where I knew it would be the best shot or this composition. Wore me out, but it was worth it... even if no one ever buys one. My images are created for my self satisfaction, if someone purchases one, then that is a BONUS....
