Artist's Description

Dinosaur skull computer model. Computer model of the skull of Allosaurus fragilis, a predatory dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period (about 150 to 135 million years ago). This model was created to study the mechanical properties of the skull. The lower images show forces of compression (yellow arrows) and tension (red arrows) as seen from the side (lower left) and below (lower right). The model is based on a computed tomography (CT) scan of an Allosaurus skull. The data is then created into a 3-D mesh model and analysed for stress points. This engineering technique is known as finitie element analysis (FEA). The results suggest that Allosaurus had a fast, downward slashing bite rather than the powerful, crushing action found in its relative Tyrannosaurus rex.
