Description
During the depression, most Americans found it necessary to drastically cut out purchasing what they considered luxury items. Among the items they stopped purchasing were attendance at the movie theaters and tableware. Many households were relegated to drinking out of old pickle jars and eating off of tin plates. Pottery manufacturers, china companies, glass industries and theaters were having to close.
As an incentive to lure housewives and young women to the movies, theater owners partnered with manufacturers of tableware and created a joint venture called Dish Night. This joint venture had several benefits. It offered a way for struggling Americans to obtain tableware. It helped save the jobs of the factory workers by the industry selling their products to the theaters, and it allowed the theaters to remain open.
