Maj. Richard A. 'Dick' Hewitt, seen here in his P-51D Mustang nicknamed 'Big Dick,' came to the 78th Fighter Group in September 1943 and served until the end of the war, logging 426 hours of combat time. During his second tour Dick was promoted to commander of the 82nd Fighter Squadron. His awards include the Silver Star, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and 13 Air Medals. His P-51's moniker alludes to his name and of course the traditional Craps call of ten. Dick's postwar book 'Target of Opportunity' is a fascinating read.
Wade Meyers spent his early years at Fort Bragg, North Carolina before his family moved to Bossier City, La. when he was ten years old. Fulfilling a dream, Wade soloed a Cessna 150 at age 17 and went on to earn his Commercial and Flight Instructor pilot certificates. After high school, he earned a B.A. in History from Louisiana State University in Shreveport while serving in the US Air Force Reserve at Barksdale Air Force Base. With marriage came a move to the beautiful Birmingham, Alabama area. Diving in head first, Wade quit his job at an aviation museum in 2003 and began to work full-time as an aviation artist.
