Historic Eilean Donan Castle is a picturesque Scottish castle situated on the small tidal island of Donan in Loch Duich found in the Kyle of Lochalsh area of the west Highlands of Scotland. The castle was founded in the thirteenth century and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae. In the early eighteenth century the Mackenzies involvement in the Jacobite rebellion led to the castle's destruction. The castle was reconstructed in the early 20th century and today it offers a look back in time to times long ago and a flavor of how life once was in the West Highlands of Scotland.
The castle frequently appears in photographs, film and television with past productions including Highlander, Loch Ness and The World is Not Enough.
The castle and island can be found about half a mile from the village of Dornie in the National Scenic Area of Kintail it is a must see must visit for any visitor to Scotland.
