Description
"Elk Calves at Yellowstone National Park" by Catherine Sherman.
Two elk calves run in a field near the parking lot of the Visitor's Center at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Herds of elk often gather in the area of The Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District in Yellowstone National Park, which comprises the administrative center for the park. It is composed of two major parts: Fort Yellowstone, the military administrative center between 1886-1918, and now a National Historic Landmark, and a concessions district which provides food, shopping, services, and lodging for park visitors and employees.
The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is one of the largest species within the deer family, Cervidae, in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and Eastern Asia.
