This is my painting of the current steps and front door "entrance" to the GRAGG Building at Eastern State Hospital. These were the steps a person or family walked through to locate admissions. These are the steps to the main switchboard, the "heart/hub" of ESH. These are the Steps to GET HELP! A new hospital was completed in 2013. Eastern State has been operating continuously since opening on May 1, 1824, making it the second oldest institution for persons with severe/chronic mental illness in the United States.
