Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles) of a member of the iridovirus group that causes African swine fever. Individual virions (coloured pink/red) possess icosahedral symmetry (the protein capsid surrounding genetic information in the form of DNA is about 190nm in diameter). Unlike other DNA- containing vertebrate viruses (except the poxviruses), the iridovirus replicates in the host cell's cytoplasm (most others replicate in the nucleus). Magnification: x16,100 when printed at 10cm wide.
