Description
The Grotto. Kuskovo. Moscow. Russia.
The Grotto was built the architect Fyodor Argunov in Baroque style in 1761-1775. The interior decor which was completed in 1775 became the most outstanding masterpiece of the "grotto's craftsman". I.Focht. The unique cool atmosphere of the pavilion made it a perfect place for the guests to rest from the summer heat. The palatial hall is decorated with numerous columns, the walls are painted to imitate marble.
The two side studies are decorated to resemble an underwater kingdom with intricate floral patterns and images of fantastic animals, birds and fishes moulded of coloured gypsun, crushed glass, marble aggregate and shells of all shapes and sizes.
Metal lattices with gilt plates were made in Sheremetev's workhop in Pavlovo village on Oka river in 1761.
