Description
The Whooping Crane is the tallest of the two crane species in North America, the other being the Sandhill Crane. In 1870 there were approximately 1,400 birds. In 1941 there were 21 wild and two captive whooping cranes left. By 2015 the total population was 603 including 161 captive birds. Most spend their winters in Texas. Alberta and the Northwest Territories of Canada are their summer breeding grounds. They can lay two eggs, but usually only one chick survives. The whoopers can live over 20 years. They forage in shallow waters. The eat all sorts of stuff such as ells, fish, frogs, rodents, snails, clams, aquatic tubers, and berries, etc. There are other animals that like to eat cranes large and small such as eagles, bobcat, bears, wolves, mountain lions, lynx, ravens alligators, etc. These birds stand about 5 feet tall and they can spread their wings over seven ft....not a tiny bird!
