I probably would not have visited the Convent of San Marco in Florence Italy had it not been for the Firenze Card (tourist museum card) which allows free access to many of the city’s museums. But it turned out being one of my favorite places! It has an ethereal atmosphere and lighting that was a delight. As an art novice, I knew little about Fra Angelico (1395 – 1455) but found his frescoes to be delicate and graceful. Viewing them in their original settings heightened their impact. The one here is entitled “Crucifixion”. Conceived and executed simply as aids to meditation and prayer, these frescoes have taken their place among the most exhilarating masterpieces of Western art. They were not intended as means of instruction or decoration, but as simple devotional images for his fellow monks for thei0r meditations and prayers.
