Love this duvet cover in the Tree Fort Suite of the Elk View Lodge, Fernie, BC, Canada.
Color-enhanced SEM showing the abdomen of a mayfly with gill tufts. With these abdominal tracheal gills, the larvae produce a stream of water from which they filter out the the detritus with special mouthparts. The larvae live 2 years in water, and after pupation the adult animals only live for two to four days. After oviposition dying mayflies fall into the water. Magnification 621 (at 12x12 cm image size).
