Description
Grape stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a grape vine (Vitis sp.) stem. At the centre of the stem is a large area of pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. Around this is a ring of vascular bundles. Each bundle contains phloem (blue) and xylem (red) cells, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of these is the cortex, which is also made of parenchyma cells (orange) and contains bundles thick walled sclerenchyma cells (brown) that provide structural support. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
