The great black cockatoo is also known as the palm cockatoo or goliath cockatoo. One of the largest cockatoo species and largest parrots in Australia. Wild palm cockatoos are found in rainforests and woodlands of New Guinea and Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. It has a large and complex vocal repertoire. This ancient species is one of the few bird species known to use tools. The male bird has a unique territorial display, where it drums with a large stick or seed pod against a dead tree, creating a loud sound that can be heard as far as 100 yards away. Although the palm cockatoo is still relatively common in Cape York, it is threatened by habitat destruction due to bauxite mining. Great Black Cockatoo Pair is a digital painting and photo composite created in Spadecaller's Florida Studio.
Spadecaller is an experienced traditional artist, who creates original hand-painted digital images and photo composite artworks. In the late fifties at eight years old, Spadecaller started formal training in traditional oil painting.Through considerable personal sacrifice, his mother nurtured his artistic talents and provided him with the tools to launch his creative journey. Spadecaller attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City (1970-71), and during the 70's up until the late 80's, he exhibited acrylic and oils in Montreal and New York.
