Description
Henri Moissan (1852-1907), French chemist. Moissan obtained his doctorate in 1880. He specialised in the study of fluorine chemistry, and succeeded in isolating the element fluorine in 1886 using an electrolysis apparatus. Moissan was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on fluorine and electric arc furnaces. His work using his furnace led to the production of boron and carbon compounds (borides and carbides), as well as artificial diamonds. Moissan was elected a member of the International Atomic Weights Committee in 1903. Artwork from the 14th volume (second period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
