Just what I wanted for a new iPhone. A special “Thank You” to artist ‘Serge Averbukh’ for the addition, at my request, to the design of my Navy rating, the lightening bolts (sparks as they are/were called) in the middle of the CPO insignia. I asked; he came through….When I use my phone, it brings back fond memories of my 20-year Navy career…. Thanks Serge….
There is fire in the sky as 10 little brown bats, scientific name Myotis lucifugus, with flame painted wings swarm the night in this moonlight bat flight nature mandala. Crude attempts at flame painting began in the early 1930s in California. The biggest boost to flame painting, began in the early ‘50s by artists like Big Daddy Ed Roth (of Rat Fink fame), Larry Watson, and my mentor Rod Powell. Custom car and rod shops began opening up in the suburbs of Los Angeles in Southern California. Instead of awaiting months of body modifications, by painting cars with wild flame designs-- an owner’s car could more quickly reach the street and cruise the schoolyards and the new drive-ins. Flames became as individual as the “driveway painters” and artists who designed them. The artform mutated into a variety of beautiful flowing fire-forms and enjoys worldwide status as a cultural icon signifying all things HOT!
For the past 12 years creating nature mandalas is a personal quest. It further defines the joy I have had for the entirety of my life fascinated with and interpreting nature in pen and ink prints, animal doodles and cartoons and now full color representational nature mandalas and nature panels.
