Artist's Description
The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is a huge game bird, in the same family as grouse and pheasants, measuring about 46 inches in length and about 16.2 pounds in weight. While typically feeding on the ground, they are good flyers and may be seen perched in trees, particularly at night. Their massive body, naked head and long tail are distinctive. They are common in spite of being heavily hunted, and their distribution is widespread in the United States. They are typically found in forested areas that are adjacent to clearings, sometimes in flocks of up to 60 birds.
These two male Wild Turkeys in colorful breeding display were photographed at Marshlands Conservancy, in Rye, New York, on 4-26-2014. I used a Nikon D800 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 lens to capture this image.
