Description
IN THE LAGOON
Perhaps, once a year, perhaps not, these throngs of ravenous albacore pursue their prey into the inshore shallows, usually in early October. Having stalked the anchovies into the shallow water, the fishermen know that the tuna are on the hunt herding the baitfish into balls for feeding. As the auburn Sun falls closer to the viridian sea the men watch in awe as the lagoon roils white and foamy as the predators chase the anchovies up toward the surface eating their fill. In due time the tuna must leave the lagoon for open water and then they will be entangled in the fishermens nets.
The fishermen cast their net into the bubbling, white water as desperate anchovies spring into the air jumping for their lives. On top of the water the tuna pick the anchovies off one by one. The ship drags its net less than three hundred feet before it grows heavy. Some of the smaller albacore wriggle their way through torn or stretched out ringlets, but most are hopelessly tangled, writhing helplessly as the men pull the net ever closer to the stern. The crew grasps the net in gnarled, weathered hands, and with one great heave, hoists it upwards and over the stern. A flood of flopping juvenile albacore smacks down onto the worn, oak deck as the net clears the gunnels. Quickly, the skipper grabs the rudder turning it to trawl once more through the school.
The netting, having begun shortly before the garnet sunset, continues on for over an hour, the sky has grown old, night is near. The albacore have tried time and again to break through the nets and reach open water, but save for a few very small ones, have been ensnared. The men hurry to load the boats before the rapidly fading light expires leaving them in complete darkness. The ships float low in the water, the captains agree that they have more than enough, there is no greed in these men. The nets are hauled for the last time and the remaining albacore torpedo into the open sea. The lagoon once again yawns peacefully quiet and placid beneath the glittering stars.
