Description
Iron maiden torture device. 19th-century artwork of a torture device known as the Jungfer or Virgin (the Jungfrau or Iron Maiden). It is shown here as it stood in 1834 in the Castle of Feistritz belonging to Baron Diedrich of Vienna. At left is a close-up of the ornament on the front. Known as iron maidens, purported existence of these devices and their possible history were described in a paper ('The Kiss of the Virgin') by British music composer and antiquarian Robert Lucas Pearsall (1795-1856). This artwork was published with Pearsall's paper in Volume 27 (1838) of 'Archaeologia', the journal of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
