Description
Georgia, the largest state east of the Mississippi River in total land area, is covered in forest land. Out of the state's 37 million acres, nearly 25 million is blanketed in forests. While the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests cover a total of 867,000 acres, the remaining forests, about 92 percent, are held privately. These forest areas offer many benefits, including clean water, carbon storage, wildlife habitat, paper products and lumber.
This evening scene in Putnam County's Oconee National Forest captures a pine tree in silhouette and a fading sunset. Far from being a great example of Georgia's healthy forests, the tree has succumbed to either insects, disease, lightning or drought. While creating a striking pose, it's easy to see the tree's time has come and gone.
