The figures are the standing Mercury in the center, with Hercules on his right and Minerva on his left, with an eagle between him and the figure of Hercules. The Beaux-Arts group was designed by French sculptor Jules-Alexis Coutan and carved by the John Donnelly Company. In 1914 when the finished work was presented it was the largest figural group extant in the world. These figures surround an enormous clock that has a circumference of 13 feet, and the entire piece stands at 48 feet high.
